OUR MICROGRID SOLUTIONS

For any industrial or commercial operation, consistent and reliable access to power is not a luxury—it is essential. In the Southeast, factors ranging from an aging power infrastructure to the increasing frequency of hurricanes and unpredictable winter storms create significant energy challenges.

Microgrids are scalable, localized energy solutions that provide the critical dependability modern operations need. More than just an emergency power supply, they can significantly reduce overall energy costs and decrease dependence on centralized utilities.

Energy Systems Southeast (ESSE) has delivered custom power solutions since our founding in 2001. We have always had a strong commitment to providing comprehensive, reliable energy strategies backed by decades of experience. Our sales team’s extensive engineering backgrounds ensure that every solution is meticulously planned for optimal performance.

As North America’s largest Generac Industrial distributor, we leverage proven, top-tier technology to design custom microgrids with a range of integrated functionalities, including solar panels, EV chargers, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and industrial generators.

Our Microgrid Solution

What Is a Microgrid?

WHAT IS A MICROGRID?

A microgrid is a self-sufficient, localized group of electricity sources and loads that can operate independently from the traditional utility grid. A microgrid functions as a single, controllable entity, allowing it to disconnect from the main grid—a process known as “islanding”—and operate autonomously whenever needed, such as during a power outage. This capability protects critical operations from power loss and enhances energy resilience.

Microgrids integrate various distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as solar panels, wind turbines, industrial generators, and battery storage systems—to supply power to a defined area like a hospital, data center, college campus, or manufacturing facility. They can operate in both grid-connected and island modes, offering unmatched flexibility and direct control over energy resources.

BENEFITS OF MICROGRID ENERGY SYSTEMS

Microgrid energy storage systems allow commercial and industrial organizations to reduce their energy costs, lower their carbon footprint, and reliably back up critical loads in the event of a blackout. Some of the biggest benefits of these solutions include:

Resilience

Resilience

Microgrids act as a dependable, uninterrupted power supply during grid outages. By providing a seamless transfer to backup power, they make sure critical services and sensitive equipment remain operational, safeguarding against data loss and operational downtime.

Cost Savings

Cost Savings

By optimizing energy usage with intelligent controls, microgrids can significantly reduce energy costs. They allow facilities to engage in “peak shaving,” using stored energy during times of high utility rates to minimize expensive peak demand charges.

Sustainability

Sustainability

By integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, microgrids reduce reliance on fossil fuels and minimize an organization’s greenhouse gas emissions. This helps companies meet corporate sustainability targets and environmental regulations.

Energy Independence

Microgrids empower facilities to generate and manage their own power, reducing dependence on centralized utilities and mitigating risks associated with grid instability and volatile energy pricing.

TYPES OF MICROGRIDS

Microgrid systems are extremely versatile. At ESSE, each solution is tailored to our customers’ specific operational and financial goals. The primary types of microgrids we design and install include:

  • Grid-tied microgrids. These systems are connected to the main utility grid but operate independently during outages. They offer the dual benefits of grid support and autonomous operation when needed.
  • Islanded microgrids. Operating entirely off-grid, this type of microgrid is the ideal solution for remote locations like mining operations or rural communities where connecting to the main grid is impractical or cost-prohibitive.
  • Hybrid microgrids. Combining elements of both grid-tied and islanded systems, hybrid microgrids offer the highest degree of flexibility and reliability. They achieve this by integrating multiple energy sources (e.g., solar and natural gas generators) and storage options.
Types of Microgrids

COMPONENTS OF A MICROGRID ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM

While our microgrid energy storage systems are customized for every customer, they often feature these elements that work in concert to deliver reliable power.

A BESS uses advanced battery technology, typically lithium-ion, to store excess energy generated from renewable sources or the grid. These systems are crucial for balancing supply and demand within the microgrid, maintaining stable voltage and frequency, and providing a stable power supply during peak demand or grid outages.

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) enables the seamless transition between the main utility grid and backup power sources. It constantly monitors utility power and automatically switches to the microgrid’s backup sources during an outage, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply.

Industrial generators provide electricity during extended outages or when renewable sources are insufficient. Fueled by diesel or natural gas, they are essential for mission-critical operations that require continuous, long-duration power.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are a key component of modern microgrids, providing clean, renewable energy that reduces both energy costs and dependence on fossil fuels. Their intermittent output is effectively managed by the BESS and microgrid controller for a stable, reliable supply.

The controller is the brain of the microgrid, using advanced software and hardware to manage energy distribution and optimize performance. These systems coordinate all components and often use predictive algorithms for load and weather forecasting to maintain the most efficient operation.

INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS

At ESSE, we leverage our deep industry expertise to design and install microgrid solutions that safeguard access to power for a diverse range of sectors. We help clients meet their unique energy goals across industries, including:

Data Centers

Data Centers

For data centers and cloud service applications where uptime is paramount, data center microgrids provide the uninterrupted power necessary to prevent data loss and ensure service continuity.
