Generator Service

Generators are essential to keep operations running in many industries. However, without ongoing preventative maintenance, this equipment may not function as required during an emergency. Professional inspections from ESSE identify potential problems early on, reducing the likelihood of malfunctions and extending your generator’s lifespan.

In most cases, generators should be serviced every six to 12 months or every 500 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Additionally, spark plugs in portable generators should be replaced every 100 to 150 operating hours. Sticking to these recommended maintenance intervals will prevent dirt and debris from accumulating and keep all components in optimal working conditions.

Regular servicing involves inspecting the generator’s engine, fuel system, electrical components, and cooling system, as well as performing any tasks necessary to restore these systems to their ideal operating conditions. ESSE can help you safeguard your facility’s power access with generator maintenance and repair services.

Full-Service Repair & Maintenance for All Generator Types

No matter what brand of generator your facility has, our technicians can keep it in optimal condition. There are several indicators we look at to determine the health of your system:

  • Oil level checks. System leaks or excessive consumption result in low oil levels, which can cause serious issues down the line. Ongoing monitoring is crucial for discovering low levels before they result in increased friction and damage to engine components.
  • Oil changes. Regularly scheduled oil changes keep your generator’s engine functioning at its best. Dark-colored, dirty older oil is ineffective at lubricating and cooling the engine, leading to reduced performance or even engine failure.
  • Air filter checks. Air filters facilitate proper air intake needed for combustion. Dirty, clogged filters restrict airflow, resulting in inefficient combustion and an overly rich fuel mixture.
  • Major service intervals. Generator manufacturers recommend service intervals based on operating hours. Postponing these recommendations can result in decreased fuel efficiency and poor system performance.

Planned maintenance encompasses everything from inspections to maintenance tasks and generator testing services, all of which are performed according to a pre-determined schedule. We can customize maintenance plans to your equipment’s needs, addressing different stages of performance in line with manufacturer guidelines:

  • Calendar cycle scheduling. Your maintenance schedule is spread out over several cycles to meet annual, quarterly, monthly, and weekly service requirements.
  • Operating inspections. These inspections are performed while your generator is in use. Critical operations are monitored 100% of operating time while non-critical operations receive more basic checks.
  • Layup. Generators are placed in layup when no longer in active use. Several tasks must be performed to protect your system during these shutdown periods, including disconnecting the generator’s batteries and fuel system, draining fluid systems, and protecting intake and exhaust ports.

Generator Maintenance

Generator Maintenance

Planned maintenance charts outline several maintenance checks that must be completed at regular intervals. These steps are particularly important because while fluids like coolant and lubricating oils can be at normal levels, they can be unknowingly contaminated, causing harm to the larger system. Maintenance inspections involve examining the following:

Located within the air filter housing, this indicator turns red to show that the air filter needs to be changed. Once the new filter is in place, the indicator is reset.

This filter can indicate when the main fuel source has been contaminated. It works by separating water from the fuel supply, routing it to a bowl where it is drained.

This paste is spread on a tank level stick to test the generator’s main fuel supply. If the fuel is contaminated with water, it will turn red.

If engine lubricating oil has leaked into the cooling system, it will float to the surface of the coolant when the system reaches an ambient temperature. This usually indicates a damaged head gasket, which is the seal that keeps coolant and oil systems separate.

Similarly, if there is a defective engine block or cylinder head, coolant can leak into the lubricating oil, resulting in a milky color on the oil dipstick. Checking coolant pressure can help determine if it’s higher than the oil pressure.

Benefits of Preventative Maintenance Programs

Preventative maintenance programs are essential for any type of generator. Preventative maintenance programs from ESSE deliver many benefits, including:

  • Extended generator lifespan
  • Reduced risk of unexpected failure
  • Improved performance and reliability
  • Minimized repair costs
  • Compliance with regulations and safety standards

We make sure each part receives the level of care and attention to detail required to maintain full functionality in the larger system. Our experienced technicians always have a generator maintenance checklist on hand to confirm that every aspect of your equipment is in ideal condition. The parts they review include:

  • Engine speed
  • Fluid and oil levels
  • Oil and air filters
  • Cooling system
  • Control panel and engine
  • Generator supply connections
  • Battery cables and terminals
  • Exhaust system
  • Belts, lines, connectors, and other accessories

Service Requests

Our service request system is an effective way to minimize costly service trips and prevent unexpected failures. We will create a custom scheduled maintenance program for your backup power system to keep it in peak operating condition. Our technicians will change the oil, coolant, and filters on set schedules to meet your warranty requirements. Additionally, our team will verify that the battery, hoses, and belts are in good condition by carefully inspecting wear points and identifying potential problems before they occur.

We offer extensive maintenance such as fuel polishing and load bank testing to guarantee reliable performance. We recommend having your generator serviced twice per year, at six-month intervals. These visits include an operational inspection as well as a comprehensive service inspection.

Operational Inspection

Our operational inspections involve a full examination of your generator and transfer switch. This includes checking the voltage and frequency sensors, coolant system, fuel system, air induction, and exhaust system. We also inspect your generator’s oil lube system, starting system, engine monitors, and safety controls to ensure optimal functionality.

Comprehensive Inspection

Our comprehensive inspection includes a full operational inspection as well as the installation of new oil and filters. Our Power-Up Trucks are stocked with a full line of power generation components and are dispatched to any location within our service area, as soon as you need it. We serve 14 states, from East Texas to the Eastern Seaboard.
